Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
