Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis suggest the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior official stated the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
